The end of the year brings busy schedules, holiday demands, winter weather, and for many of us at RCH, the ongoing push of Meditech build work. It’s a meaningful season, but we would be lying if we didn’t always admit that it’s a stressful one.
And while we are in the profession of spending our days caring for others, this month we want to pause and remind you: you deserve care too.
Employee burnout is real; not a buzzword, not a sign of weakness, and not something you “push through.” It’s what happens when the constant responsibility of healthcare, the emotional weight of patient care, and the demands of home life all collide.
This month, we’re focusing on what burnout looks like, how to manage it, and what support is here for you at RCH.
What Burnout Really Looks Like
Burnout shows up differently for everyone, but common signs include:
- Feeling drained even after a day off
- Losing interest in work you used to enjoy
- Irritability, frustration, or emotional flatness
- Reduced focus or “foggy” thinking
- Dreading tasks that once felt manageable
- Feeling disconnected or on autopilot
These are not character flaws. They’re signals, or reminders, that your mind and body need restoration, not more pressure.
Healthy, Realistic Ways to Cope
Here are some surface-level tips, actual strategies that help healthcare teams stay grounded:
1. Create boundaries that protect your energy
You cannot pour from an empty cup. Step away when you’re off the clock. Protect your personal time during Meditech build season and beyond.
2. Practice single-tasking, not multi-tasking
Your brain can only prioritize one urgent thing at a time. Slowing your mental pace reduces overwhelm and improves accuracy.
3. Debrief with someone you trust
Healthcare culture often pushes us to “be strong,” but talking it out (even briefly) is one of the most effective ways to prevent burnout.
4. Move your body in ways that don’t feel like a chore
A 5–10 minute walk. Stretching on your break. Breathing exercises. These reset your nervous system and reduce stress hormones.
5. Take real breaks (even small ones)
Sit down. Breathe. Drink water without multitasking. Let your brain pause long enough to reset.
6. Ask for support before the breaking point
Burnout grows in isolation. Reaching out early is actually resilience, not weakness.
