RCH Goes the Extra Mile (or Two or Three) to Promote Healthy Community

A pleasant Saturday morning on July 10 saw 13 people participate in the first Walk With a Doc event, held at the track at the Plainville football field. Dr. Jen Brull began with a brief talk on how to communicate effectively with your healthcare provider. This was followed by an easy warm-up session of light stretching led by AJ Thomas, CEO of RCH and a board certified Physical Therapist. Then the group started walking around the track at their own pace.

During the 50 minute Dr. Brull would “adopt” a small group of walkers and talk to each participant, answering any questions that they had. When finished with that group, Dr. Brull would double back and do the same with each succeeding group or individual.

The walk ended with another easy stretching session followed by snacks of fruit and orange juice popsicles.

Walk With a Doc is an international non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire communities through movement and conversation. Walk with a Doc promotes physical activity and stepping up awareness about healthy eating to help improve the heart health of the nation.

Tonia Werner, an RCH administrative assistant and local walking enthusiast, was instrumental in setting up the ongoing program and coordinating the event. “Everything went very smoothly and I am excited to get more people involved with our next walk on August 14th” said Werner.

While Tonia was pleased with the initial outing, she has plans to expand the scope of the event, saying “I am hoping to get some activities for the kiddos, so the parents can enjoy some adult exercise time. We all get so busy with our jobs, kids, grandkids, etc. that it gets hard to set aside time for ourselves to exercise. I’m hoping that these walks will develop into some great friendships and accountability partners for regular exercising”.

If anyone has any questions or ideas on our next walk, please contact Tonia at 785-688-4481…..otherwise be at the Plainville football field on August 14 by 9:00 a.m. for an hour of information, light cardio exercise at your own pace and fun with friends.
