RCH Auxiliary/Red Cross Announce Blood Drive Honoring Elvera Beiker

The Rooks County Health Center Auxiliary (RCHA) and the American Red Cross have announced that the scheduled July 2 blood drive will be held in honor of Elvera Beiker.

Beiker is a long time member of RCHA, and has been the chairperson of the Red Cross blood drives sponsored by the Auxiliary for many years. Under Beiker’s oversight, the RCHA blood drives often meet or exceed their goals of units of blood donated.

A veteran Auxiliary member of over 30 years, Beiker early on decided that helping with the blood drives was an essential service to the residents of the county. “Doing our volunteer work for the Auxiliary we were asked to help at different functions, and I could see how important blood donation was for people in need. I figured I could make a difference that way” she said.

Beiker is quick to give credit to all of the other volunteers who assist her for the 4 to 5 blood drives held annually in Plainville, saying “The helpers and volunteers are really appreciated, whether they are Auxiliary members, high school students or whoever has the time to join in. We’re all here to help the community”. Beiker also had high praise for local companies or groups that offer financial or other support for the drives, naming Midwest Energy, Nex-Tech, Plainville Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus in particular.

Beiker said she is pleased to see all ages and walks of life giving blood, noting that donors can be as young as 16 years old if they their parent’s permission. And Beiker certainly walks the walk when she urges others to give blood, having donated nearly 7 gallons herself over the years.

Please join the American Red Cross in honoring Elvera Beiker by donating blood on Monday, July 2 between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, just east of Sacred Heart Church in Plainville.

Visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS for an appointment time to donate, or just show up to give the gift of life.
