At Rooks County Health Center, we treat our patients like family. We know that living in a rural area means our patients are our family members, friends and neighbors. We know that surgery–even minor surgery– is stressful for the patient, their family and friends. Our caring staff is always available to answer your questions and to help ease your anxiety. At RCH, we do our best to make patients and visitors comfortable and safe.

Pre-Admission Phone Call or Visit

Please have the following items available for your Pre-Admission phone call or visit:
  • A list of medication(s) you are currently taking, including the dosage and time of day taken.
  • A list of allergies and previous surgeries.
  • Insurance and ID cards.
During this phone call or visit, we will:
  • Confirm the date and time of your procedure.
  • Review your health history.
  • Give you instructions on how to prepare for your procedure and what to expect afterwards.
  • Answer any questions you may have.

Preparing for Your Procedure Day

For your personal safety and comfort, please follow these guidelines:
DO NOT:
  • DO NOT eat or drink anything (including water) after midnight. (Except sips of water with approved medications, see below.)
  • DO NOT chew gum, eat hard candy or smoke after midnight the day of your procedure.
  • DO NOT wear make-up, artificial nails, nail polish, jewelry or contact lenses.
DO:
  • DO take blood pressure, heart and/or seizure medications with a small sip of water the morning of your procedure.
  • DO take a bath/shower the morning of your procedure.
  • DO call your doctor if you have health changes between your last visit and the day of your procedure (i.e. cold, fever, flu, etc.).
  • DO wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing.
  • DO have an adult to drive you home and be able to help for the next 24 hours if you require IV sedation. It is policy that you cannot drive yourself home.

Step-by-Step

1. Your Procedure is Scheduled
Your doctor has discussed your need for this procedure with you and scheduled your procedure at Rooks County Health Center.

2. Pre-Admission Services
A nurse from RCH Surgical Services will attempt to reach you by telephone. If you have not been contacted within three days, please call 785-688-4442 as soon as possible. This process must be completed before your procedure or your procedure may be delayed.

3. The Day of Your Procedure
When you arrive at the hospital, stop by the Admissions Desk to notify them that you have arrived.

4. Admission
You will be directed to the surgical area where a nurse will help you prepare for your procedure. A parent or legal guardian must accompany patients under 18 years of age, or patients who cannot sign their own consents.

5. Your Procedure
A member of your family or a friend may stay with you until you are taken to the Procedure Room. While you are in surgery, your family or friends must wait in our Family Lobby area.

6. Your Recovery
When your procedure is over, the nursing staff will monitor your progress. Family members may be allowed to be with you during this time.

7. Going Home
Before you leave, your nurse will give you home care instructions.

8. Follow-up
Within a few days of your procedure, a nurse will call to check on your recovery and answer any questions you may have. If you need to speak to a nurse sooner, please call Outpatient Surgery at 785-688-4442 between the hours of 8 a.m.–8 p.m.
